Filmmakers, cultural institution representatives, scholars, and audiences from China and across Europe gathered at Cin\u00e9ma Aventure to launch a cinematic dialogue that transcends language and cultural boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival is organized by the EU\u2013China Film Festival Committee and co-presented by the Communication University of China, the China International Communications Group (Europe\u2013Africa Communication Center), and the Nouvelles d\u2019Europe Cultural Media Group. Under the theme <em>\u201cSeeing Each Other Through Images,\u201d<\/em> the festival aims to use cinema as a bridge for cultural exchange and mutual understanding between China and Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eucnff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1844\" style=\"width:500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eucnff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.eucnff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eucnff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1.png 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Photo courtesy of the organizers<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe EU\u2013China Film Festival is not only a platform for showcasing cinema, but also a form of cultural exchange initiated through images,\u201d said <strong>Elsa Yuan Mengqian<\/strong>, Secretary-General of the festival, in her opening remarks. \u201cThrough film, we are able to see one another \u2014 to recognize differences as well as shared experiences, to observe the details of everyday life and the common ground of human emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French director <strong>Gilles Thompson<\/strong> noted that the power of cinema lies in its ability to offer new perspectives on one another. \u201cImages are not simply a way of telling stories; they are a language for understanding the world.\u201d<br><strong>Laura Houlgatte<\/strong>, CEO of the International Union of Cinemas (UNIC), emphasized that collaboration between Chinese and European filmmakers brings fresh energy to Europe\u2019s film landscape. \u201cFestivals like this allow audiences to encounter diverse creative voices and gain a deeper understanding of China through cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening film of the festival was <strong>Georgia<\/strong>, directed by Chinese filmmaker <strong>Chakme (Qiao Mei)<\/strong>, which premiered that evening. Told through a subtle and poetic visual language, the film follows the coming-of-age story of a girl of Chinese-Belgian heritage. The event featured an awards ceremony and a thematic dialogue, during which the <strong>EU\u2013China Light &amp; Image Awards<\/strong>, the <strong>EU\u2013China Visual Communication Awards<\/strong>, and the <strong>EU\u2013China Cultural Exchange Contribution Awards<\/strong> were presented. Institutions and professionals from youth filmmaking, education, and international media were recognized, reflecting the broad participation and deepening cooperation within EU\u2013China cultural exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selected works were also screened, including <em>A Belgian Geologist in China<\/em>, <em>China Momentum in Europe<\/em>, <em>Lighting Up Ali: An Engineer\u2019s Diary<\/em>, and <em>Encounters with China: Xixi Wetland<\/em>. Through attentive and realistic storytelling, these films presented diverse perspectives on contemporary China and its human dimension.<br>Guests including French director <strong>Gilles Thompson<\/strong>, German visual artist <strong>Thomas Kuczera<\/strong>, and <strong>Wu Jianying<\/strong>, representative of <em>People\u2019s Daily<\/em>, took part in discussions around the festival theme. Kuczera remarked that visual storytelling allows audiences to move beyond linguistic barriers: \u201cIn the world of images, there are no borders \u2014 only emotion.\u201d Wu noted that sincere and nuanced perspectives help European audiences better understand a dynamic and multi-dimensional China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That evening, <strong>The Little Ring<\/strong>, directed by Chakme, had its world premiere in Brussels. Chakme and Thompson engaged in a conversation on cinematic creation and cultural expression, discussing the relationship between reality and imagination and the emotional connection between films and their audiences. The exchange was met with strong engagement from the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its founding in 2015, the EU\u2013China Film Festival has become an important platform for cultural exchange between China and Europe. Through cinema \u2014 a shared global language \u2014 filmmakers from both sides continue to deepen cooperation, expand mutual understanding, and grow through dialogue.
